Charcoal

Charcoal is traditionally used as fuel for barbecuing because grilling food on a charcoal produces an authentic char-grilled taste. You can buy either lump charcoal or briquettes, which vary slightly in composition, but are not very different. Lump charcoal is made by burning wood in the absence of oxygen. Because this is the most natural form of charcoal, purists often prefer lump to briquettes. Lump charcoal burns hotter, lights faster and leaves much less ash than briquette. When using a grill with adjustable air vents, using lump charcoal allows for easier temperature adjustment because it is more responsive to oxygen. The only real downsides are the fact that lump charcoal is more expensive, burns faster and less consistent because bags can sometimes contain small charcoal pieces which can’t really be used effectively. Here at Millrace we have lump charcoal options from Big K, such as Instant Light Charcoal 2 x 1kg by Big K Products or from Weber, such as Weber Premium Express Charcoal 5kg amongst a few options.

Briquettes

Briquettes are cheap, reliable and widely available; here at Mill Race Garden Centre we have a variety of bag sizes, with Charcoal Briquettes 3kg by Big K Products being the smallest quantity. Briquettes are manufactured wood by-products compressed with additives, to help them light and burn consistently. When lit, the additives give off a chemical smell, but allowing them to burn until they are covered in white ash should stop the smell being transferred to the food you’re grilling. Briquettes provide a stable burn because they maintain a steady temperature for a longer period than lump charcoal.
