Plant Fertiliser

Through photosynthesis, plants are able to make their own food. They capture the energy from the sunlight to help turn carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates. However, in order for plants to remain healthy to take additional nutrients from the compost or soil, they must be provided with supplementary fertiliser. The very basic nutrients needed by plants are nitrogen, for leaf and stem growth, potassium, for flowers, fruit and to maintain healthy growth and also phosphorus for root growth.

Adding well rotted manure is ideal because it contains plenty of nutrients for plants; and can be used before planting or used as surface mulch around plants.

Good root establishment and growth can be encouraged by adding fertiliser like Growmore Garden Fertiliser to the base of planting holes for new plants.

J. Arthur Bower's Growmore Granular 10kg is a balanced granular fertiliser. These can be applied around all established plants through spring. You should avoid getting the granules on soft stems and leaves as it may cause scorching as a result.

If you wish to provide nutrients for the whole growing season (up to 6 months), when planting summer bedding; you should consider adding slow release granular fertiliser to the compost in pots. See: Miracle Grow Slow Release

Gardman WaterGel Crystals 15g are fertilisers which can be mixed with water for liquid application. These are quick acting as the plant roots can take in the dissolved nutrients with the water. The watergel can reduce watering by up to 4 times, so it’s ideal for when you are away on holiday or unable to water your plants for a long period of time. They’re ideal for hanging baskets, pots and tubs as they improve the productivity of dry soils.
