Irrigation - Hoses, Pipes & Reels

Irrigation can be used in the maintenance of gardens and to assist in growing agricultural crops amongst other things. Irrigation is the artificial provision or application of water to land or to soil.

When do I water and how much do I water?

During the summer months, or generally in warm weather, it may be a good idea to water your garden in the morning. This gives plants a chance to take in the moisture before the hot sun or strong winds evaporate and take away the water. Doing this also protects plants from wilting in the afternoon heat. It may be a good idea for more sensitive plants to be covered with a shade cloth in prolonged drought, to limit midday transpiration. It isn’t best practice to water your garden too late because the foliage needs to have enough time to dry whilst the sun is up so it doesn’t develop fungal diseases.

Ideally, you want the top 2-3 inches of the soil to be dry and the soil below that to be moist. While seeds and seedlings need moisture closer to the surface of the soil, older and more established plants need deep watering to help develop roots to be able to find water in the subsoil in time of drought. Damp soil is good, but you don’t want to overwater and make the soil soggy down to 5-6 inches below the surface. When soil is waterlogged, roots become deprived of oxygen and may lose the ability to take up water.

Mulching

You can both keep your garden moist and reduce weed problems by up to 80-90% by adding a layer of organic mulch to the top of your beds. Doing this may also prevent certain kinds of soil diseases from affecting the lower leaves of your plants. Using wood chips, bark or small rocks for example, decreases soil moisture evaporation, which in turn reduces the amount of water your garden needs.
